Limewood on painted wood base, H11 x W60 x D19cm including base.
This pays tribute to what the Thames does for London. It provides a permanent open space with a big sky above, so that, amid ever more massive and closer, randomly placed buildings, it is still possible to lean on the parapet of a bridge, look into distance and let your mind wander.
It was composed by drawing a line graph of the difference between the heights of the tallest buildings near Blackfriars Bridge and the width of the river there, then creating he shape suggested by the graph, keeping the angles and proportions. I added elements that suggest the water, the horizontal stretch of the river and the arches of the bridge. I tried to recreate the restful, expansive feeling that looking into distance over water gives.
It was also an opportunity to work with straight lines, planar shapes and triangles.
